Buying Carpets in Singapore: How to Care for and Live With Your Rug

If you’re planning to buy rugs online in Singapore, one of the most common questions we hear is:

“How do I take care of it properly in our climate?” Let’s start with this; rugs are meant to be lived with.

In Singapore, many homeowners worry about humidity, spills, pets, daily foot traffic, and whether they might “ruin” their rug. The truth is, most rugs don’t need perfect care. They need sensible care.

Whether you’ve chosen a handmade piece or a practical machine-made option, this guide will help you maintain your rug confidently in a Singapore home.

Rug Care in Singapore: What Actually Matters

Singapore’s humidity and indoor living conditions do affect rugs but not in dramatic ways if you follow simple habits. When customers buy rugs online in Singapore, we usually share advice that fits real homes and real routines, not a strict rulebook.

Regular Rug Maintenance After You Buy Rugs

Vacuuming is important, but overdoing it can be just as damaging as neglect.

  • If your vacuum has very strong suction or an aggressive roller brush, don’t vacuum too frequently.

  • Strong suction can pull fibres over time, especially on handmade rugs.

  • If your vacuum has a gentler setting or no roller, regular vacuuming is generally fine.

Our usual advice: clean enough to remove surface dust, but don’t treat your rug like a commercial carpet tile.

Spills and Stains: What to Do for Machine-Made Rugs

If you buy rugs for daily use, especially in family homes, spills will happen. And that’s okay.

For small, localised stains on machine-made rugs, here’s a simple method we often recommend:

  1. Use about one litre of warm water.

  2. Add two caps of shampoo.

  3. Add a quarter cap of white bleach.

  4. Gently work on the affected area with a soft brush.

  5. Discard dirty water and repeat using clean water only.

  6. Rinse out residue carefully.

  7. Place tissue or absorbent paper over the area to draw out moisture.

  8. Let it dry under the sun or with a fan.

Important: This method is only for stains on machine-made rugs. If there is a stain on a handmade rug, please contact us first or send it to a carpet specialist. Do not attempt this method on handmade rugs.

This works well for many everyday stains on machine-made rugs, especially when addressed early.

Can You Wash Rugs in a Washing Machine?

Some thinner rugs, such as certain Isfahan machine-made rugs, can be placed in the washing machine. That said, not every rug is suitable for this, even if it looks thin. Materials, backing, and construction all matter.

If you’re unsure, the safest option is simple; contact us first. We’d much rather advise you before anything goes into a washing machine.

Professional Deep Cleaning: When Is It Needed?

While day-to-day care makes a big difference, we generally recommend a professional deep clean about once a year.

At Fotohi Carpet Gallery, we offer carpet cleaning services and assess each rug on a case-by-case basis. Handmade rugs, machine-made rugs, older pieces, and heavily used rugs all require different approaches.

Deep cleaning isn’t about making a rug look brand new. It’s about removing embedded dirt that regular vacuuming can’t reach, helping the rug age better over time.

Small Habits That Extend the Life of Your Rug

1. Rotate Your Rug

If your rug sits under a sofa, desk, or bed, certain areas carry more weight. Rotating it occasionally distributes wear evenly and extends its lifespan.

2. Store Rugs Properly

If you need to store your rug:

  • Roll thicker or handmade rugs to prevent creases.

  • Folding is generally acceptable for thinner machine-made rugs.

  • Always store in a dry, clean space away from prolonged moisture.

Humidity in Singapore isn’t the enemy, trapped moisture is.

Living Comfortably After Your Rug Purchase

Every rug is different. Materials, density, construction, and how you use it all matter. That’s why we always encourage customers to ask questions, before and after purchase.

Living with a rug shouldn’t feel stressful.

With simple care and knowledge, your rug will settle into your home and age naturally alongside your space. When you buy rugs in Singapore, you’re not just choosing a design. You’re choosing something that becomes part of your daily life.

Whether it’s:

  • A handmade rug with heritage craftsmanship

  • A practical machine-made rug for family living

  • Or a lightweight piece suited to Singapore’s climate

The key is understanding how to live with it, not protect it from life. If you’re ever unsure, we’re always happy to advise.

Because the right rug doesn’t need perfect care,  just thoughtful care.
