This antique Persian carpet originates from Tehran and dates back approximately 125 years, from a time when the city was still an active centre for carpet weaving. Handwoven in wool on a cotton foundation, the piece has been well used over the decades, resulting in a thinner, softer handle that is characteristic of genuine vintage and antique carpets.
Featuring an all-over floral design and an uncommon size, the carpet shares certain visual qualities with rugs from Isfahan and Qom. However, it is distinguished by its deep, rich red palette, darker and more saturated than typically seen in Isfahan pieces, as well as by its identifiable Tehran weaving structure.
Over a century ago, Tehran shifted its economic focus away from carpet production toward a broader range of modern industries and services, making carpets from this region increasingly rare today. As such, this piece stands as a meaningful example of a weaving tradition that has largely disappeared, offering both historical interest and timeless decorative appeal for collectors and enthusiasts.
